Finding Bliss
Finding Bliss is an edgy, sexy comedy that gives us a peek at the lighter side of the adult film industry through the eyes of an idealistic 24 year-old woman. Jody Balaban is an aspiring filmmaker whose closest job in The Industry is directing traffic at Universal Studios. When Jody finally does get a break it comes with a moral dilemma attached - it's a job editing porn at Grind Productions. Irene Fox is the shrewd businesswoman who runs Grind. Having seen Jody's award-winning short film, Irene senses that Jody can help Grind make their first "real" movie, "like Last Tango In Paris," which they plan to release in art-house theaters across the country. She seduces Jody to edit the film by challenging her to bring a smart female point of view to the sexual content in the movie, which is the crucial element needed for the film to cross-over into the mainstream. At first horrified by the prospect of exposing herself to the cockroaches of the adult film industry, Jody has a remarkable change of heart when she realizes that Grind has all the facilities she needs to make her own heart-felt romantic movie - on the sly of course. Jody rationalizes taking the job on the grounds that "the means justifies the ends" - by editing porn during the day, she'll be able to make meaningful art at night. At first, Jody's plan seems to be working out as she prepares to shoot her film after hours. But things get complicated when Jody meets Jeff Drake, the charming Director of porn. Jeff, also an award-winning filmmaker, once had his own dreams of making 'real' films, but now is a hard-worn cynic who has given up on love and art. In Jody, he sees the idealism he once had and secretly craves to feel again. Jody, on the other hand, starts to crave more than just romance as she is forced to face her own sexual hang-ups. The exposure to seamy, sultry sex day in and day out begins to have a strange effect on her as she realizes the porn she so harshly judged is getting her aroused. Then, Jody gets caught. The realization that Jody took the job to exploit Grind's facilities would normally get her fired, but Irene has a better idea. Jody can use Grind's facilities IF she'll rewrite Jeff's lackluster porn script into the art-house piece that Irene wants. What follows is Jeff and Jody's unlikely, and heated, pairing in work and love.
A classic struggle between good girls and bad boys, art and commerce, idealism and selling out.
FINDING BLISS is a hilarious tale of self-discovery and an exploration of the universal search to reconcile our needs for great love and great sex.
